Types of digital IDs

Auðkenni offers individuals two main types of digital ID:

Digital ID on a SIM card, associated with an Icelandic phone number, have been available for many years and are well known to most. One must visit a registration center to obtain electronic certificates on a SIM card.

The Auðkenni App, however, was released in 2021 and is a new generation of elec; the app does not link to a phone number, but an internet connection is essential. The app is in constant development, and now those with an Icelandic passport can activate it through self-service, anytime and anywhere.

The two types are comparable, but there is a difference between them. Given the current situation, we recommend that users own both types, as either phone or network systems may be inoperative at certain times or areas. Additionally, a service provider might only offer login with one type.

The table below illustrates the main differences between the species:

As has been mentioned, it is possible to activate the Auðkenni App with self-registration, but digital ID on a SIM card can only be activated at a registration authority. At a registration authority, it is also possible to obtain digital ID for the Auðkenni App. One must always present allowed personal IDs to receive electronic ID.

Digital ID on an Auðkenni card

Individuals can also get digital ID on an Auðkenni card, which is a plastic card the same size as a payment card. These cards carry an annual fee and need to be connected to PCs with a card reader. Click here for more information about the Auðkenni card.
