Allowed personal IDs
When you apply for digital ID at a registration authority, you must present a valid personal ID.
The following personal IDs are accepted for individual verification:
Passports from all countries.
Driver's licenses from the Nordic countries (Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland).
ID cards that also serve as travel documents*, issued within the Schengen and EEA.
Icelandic identity cards, issued from March 1st, 2024 by the National Registry of Iceland.
Residence permit.

These identity documents must always meet the following conditions:
The name must be the same as in the National Registry of Iceland, if the ID number of the document holder is not found on the presented credentials.
The date of birth must be the same as in the National Registry of Iceland.
The photo of the ID holder needs to be clear and distinct.
The ID must be valid on the day the application for electronic ID is made.
There are several different types of Icelandic passports. We accept all of them except for emergency passports.
Ordinary passports
Diplomatic passports
Service passports
Passports for foreigners
Refugee travel document
Please note! The following forms of identification are not accepted:
Digital certificates.
Laminated paper certificates. Examples: The old pink or green driving licenses and the white Icelandic ID cards.
Emergency passports
Passport with insufficient validity
*Issued by a foreign government authority corresponding to the National Register of Iceland. If it cannot be confirmed that the identity card is also a travel document, Auðkenni is authorized to refuse to issue the electronic document. See more information in Regulation 866/2017.
