What is NFC?

To use self-registration in the Auðkenni App, you need a personal ID with a NFC chip and a smartphone that supports NFC.

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a wireless technology that, among other things, enables smartphones to read information from personal ID securely.

Does your personal D have a NFC chip?
For self-registration in the Auðkenni App, you can only use Icelandic passports and Icelandic ID cards, as the digital ID is linked to an Icelandic ID number (kennitala).

Personal IDs that have a NFC chip are marked with the NFC symbol shown below, on either the front or back side of the document.

The NFC chip contains machine-readable information from the personal ID, such as full name, date of birth, gender, nationality, document number, and period of validity. It may also contain biometrics, such as a facial image.

Does your smartphone support NFC?
If, for example, you can use your phone to pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay, then your phone supports NFC.

Android phones

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Look for NFC. It is often under Connections, Connected devices or similar menus.

  3. If NFC is in the settings, check whether NFC is turned on.

iPhone
iPhone 7 and newer support NFC, and in general you don’t need to enable NFC separately in the settings.

Other smartphones
Most newer Android phones support NFC, but it depends on the manufacturer and model of the phone.

You can check whether your phone supports NFC in the phone’s settings or on the manufacturer’s website.

Older phones and mobile phones that are not smartphones
Older phones and mobile phones that are not smartphones generally do not support NFC and therefore cannot be used for self-registration in the Auðkenni App.

If your smartphone does not support NFC you cannot use self-registration. However, you can go to a registration station and get digital ID in the Auðkenni App.
