A digital ID on an Auðkenni card

Individuals can obtain digital ID on Auðkenni card which is a plastic card of the same size as a payment card.

On February 18, 2025, changes were made to the Auðkenni service such that private and professional identification were consolidated under the title of digital ID on the Auðkenni card.

Individuals who have used employee identification should in most cases be able to use electronic credentials on an Auðkenni card to carry out all digital actions on behalf of a legal entity, as long as the person has a power of attorney or authorization on the website of the relevant service provider. In some cases, however, an equipment certificatemay need to replace the employee ID, since the digital ID on an Auðkenni card does not contain the legal entity's identification number.

As with other electronic IDs, only the certificate holder themself is authorized to use them.

To use the Auðkenni card, the user must have the following:

  • A special card reader that connects to the computer via a USB port. Card readers are available at most bank branches and at Auðkenni, Katrínartún 4 on the first floor.

  • The Smart ID app.

  • The Safenet Minidriver program.

Validity Period
