The Auðkenni App will replace the digital ID on SIM cards that has been available for many years. We therefore recommend that you download the Auðkenni app and activate it with an Icelandic passport – it only takes a few minutes and you can be anywhere in the world. If you do not have an Icelandic passport, you can have the App activated at a registration authority by presenting an allowed personal ID.

Digital IDs on SIM cards are still available, and to get a new one you need to go to a registration authority. Note that it is necessary to have an Icelandic phone number. Registration authorities are located all around the country; remember to bring an allowed personal ID with you.
