Around 25 thousand people will receive an SMS message from Auðkenni in March, April and May 2026, informing them that the expiry date of their digital ID on their SIM card is approaching. The message is sent to users 15 days before it expires and then again 7 days before.

A large group of people will receive this message during the holidays at the upcoming Easter, when registration authorities around the country and Auðkenni’s customer service will be closed. There is, however, one registration authority that is open around the clock, no matter the weather, all year round, and that is self-registration in the Auðkenni App. In light of this, people are encouraged to download the Auðkenni App and activate it through self-registration. The app is a new generation of digital ID.

It’s quick to activate the App with an Icelandic passport. It only takes a few minutes and you can be anywhere in the world while doing it. The Auðkenni App is a simple and secure way to authenticate yourself and sign documents.

Download the Auðkenni App
Digital ID on a SIM card has been available for years, but now the Auðkenni App is taking over. You can download the Auðkenni App from the Auðkenni website or from the Play Store for Android and the App Store for Apple. In order for self-registration you need to have an Icelandic passport. The digital ID in the Auðkenni App replaces the older digital ID on a SIM card.

Personal ID at registration authority

Don’t have an Icelandic passport?
Those who do not have an Icelandic passport can go to any of Auðkenni’s registration authority, which are located all around the country.

Do you want to keep using the ID on your SIM card?
At the registration authority, you can have a new digital ID issued on a SIM card if you prefer to continue using that type of digital ID. It’s easy to have both a digital ID on a SIM card and the Auðkenni App on the same phone or on separate devices.

Works on both phone and tablet
You can have the digital ID app on both your mobile phone and your tablet. Most service providers offer login with both types of digital IDs.

The App does not renew the SIM card
It is important to note that when the Auðkenni App is activated, the digital ID on the SIM card is not renewed, as these are two different types of digital IDs.
