Mobile e-certificates work as an extension of traditional identity papers such as driving licences and passports. The certificates are used for online authentication of the certificate holder and for signatures.
The certificates are stored on your mobile phone SIM card. You select a PIN that will work as your key. The mobile certificates work with both old and new mobile phones and almost all operating systems. There‘s no need for any additional hardware or software.
You simply enter a service provider‘s website, choose to log in or sign with mobile certificates and enter your phone number. An automatic response will pop up on your mobile screen and ask if you want to use your certificates. If you accept, you can then enter your chosen PIN and the login will be completed.
Only Icelandic SIM cards supports the Icelandic electronic certificates. The certificates can only be issued to persons with an Icelandic social security number.
